I began my journey at a time when society was not open or understanding of people of my kind. We were somewhat of an urban myth, who only existed after dark, and whose value was limited to performances at a local gay night club. Even in the gay community we faced segregation, prejudice, and hate. I have definitely seen the dark side of that multicolored bright rainbow, where unfortunately my color was not represented.
But where there is darkness, light exists, and that came in the form of the bonds and relationships I made with my trans sisters. We were all in the same boat, trying to head to dry land to avoid the sharks that swam around us.
That is why I started my business 30 years ago. Not with the intent of wealth, but with the intent of surviving. Being a trans woman who owned her own independent business was not heard of, and I received nothing but negativity and ridicule along the way. But I was determined to make it to dry land.
It was not easy, but I have no regrets, because I don’t gauge my success based on my achievements. I base it on what I was able to overcome. If I had allowed what I am to determine who I am and where I am going, then I would only be limiting myself from being. And by the grace of God, I am who I am.
I have been blessed with not only a successful business with diverse clients who show me appreciation and acceptance, but I have also been blessed with the opportunity to pay it forward, by being able to provide a safe, judgment-free work environment for members of the transgender community.
